Daratumumab is a monoclonal antibody that targets the CD38 protein, which is a cell surface antigen found in high numbers on multiple myeloma cells. By binding to CD38, daratumumab induces cell death through several mechanisms:
Complement-Dependent Cytotoxicity (CDC): Daratumumab activates the complement system, a part of the immune system, leading to the formation of the membrane attack complex that lyses the myeloma cells.
Antibody-Dependent Cellular Cytotoxicity (ADCC): The binding of daratumumab to CD38 attracts immune effector cells, like natural killer (NK) cells, which then attack and kill the cancerous cells.
