Rosuvastatin is a statin medication primarily used to lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase. This enzyme is critical in the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, an early and rate-limiting step in the synthesis of cholesterol.
